Our aim is to tell stories that have never been told, as they have never been told. They are all African, compelling and driven by this singular purpose: we are turning narratives into legacy.
Our extensive experience in the publishing industry is built on the impact of three bestselling books by founder Gayton McKenzie; The Choice: the Gayton McKenzie Story, A Hustler’s Bible; Words to Hustle by and The Uncomfortable Truth.
Our books are authentic and stories powerful. We are as literary-driven as we are market-focused, and believe that talent is also a business that we have been conquering for more than 10 years.
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, we believe in narratives that are rooted at home – reflecting our aspirations, shared experiences as well as our complexities and resilience as a people.
We believe that everyone has a story to tell, and looking for experiences that mirror society. We also know that the only way a story can be powerful if it is unique. To this end, our writers have all lived “a life less ordinary.”
These are the core characteristics that define Hustler’s Empire Publishing:
Our core business is media. Every book is seen as a multi-media project with an audience in South Africa, East and West Africa and Europe. We do not just have the audacity to dream. We dream big and work very hard to make our dreams come true.
Ours is an audacious company. When no publisher wanted to take on The Choice, Gayton McKenzie and the book’s coauthor Charles Cilliers went the independent route, and in the process launching the company as we are today.
We love stories and are determined to turn ours into some of the most definitive narratives to come out of South Africa and Africa.
Our main aim is to publish non-fiction books of all genres – as long as the story is compelling and the experience extra-ordinary.
Our writers include maverick businessman and headline-maker Kenny Kunene, rebel-rousing politician Andile Mngxitama, and Lerato Mogoatlhe, journalist turned a travel writer whose life story spans five years of living around Africa.
Although we try to not be prescriptive, we also know that exceptionality is key. If you believe you have a story worth telling, email your biography with a complete manuscript, including a synopsis of the book and outline of every chapter.
